Leukemia is a cancer of the blood cells. It starts in the bone marrow where cells are made.
Your bone marrow creates white blood cells that fight body infections, red blood cells that transport oxygen, and platelets that help you blood clot.
Leukemia causes the bone marrow to create an excessive amount of white blood cells formally called, leukemia cells; however, they don't do the average work of a white blood cell - they grow faster than normal cells and won't stop growing when they should stop.
If untreated, leukemia cells will crowd out to normal blood cells and and cause serious problems such as anemia, bleeding, and infections. It may also spread to lymph nodes or other organs and cause swelling and pain.
